FTP/SFTP Access PDF Print E-mail

How do I upload files to my site?

If you've decided to design your own Website, you'll need to be able to upload files to the server. To accomplish this, Host 17 supports both FTP and SFTP (Secure FTP). To access your site use the information from your Welcome Letter.

domain name or IP address: ftp.yourdomain.com
username: yourdomain (without the .com ending)
password: secret

Can you recommend an FTP client?

Depending on your operating system, Host 17 recommends the follwing free FTP clients:
  • Windows users can download FileZilla
  • Mac (OS X) users can download Fugu
  • Mac (OS 7.5.1 or higher) users can download MacSSH
  • Linux (GNOME) users can download gFTP if it's not already included with their distribution
  • Linux (KDE) users can download
  • Linux users who choose not to use X Windows can use command line programs such as NcFTP.

To briefly illustrate the use of an FTP client, we show the use of FileZilla in Windows. The operation of other graphical FTP programs is similar even though the interface is different. After installing and starting FileZilla, you should see a screen like the following.

FileZilla Main Screen

To begin you will need to create a connection to your site. Type the name of your site in the Address field (i.e. ftp.yourdomain.com) Type your username in the User field and your password in the Password field. Type 21 in the Port field. Then click Quickconnect.

FileZilla Connected Screen

Once connected you will see your Website folders listed on the Remote Site window to the right. Double click on the public_html folder to access the area where you will upload your files. IMPORTANT: Note the stats folder inside and avoid uploading files into it or deleting it as it contains valuable information about your Website.

FileZilla Directory Listing Screen

Navigate to the appropriate folder where your files are stored on the Local Site window to the left. Highlight the files you want to upload and then drag them to the Remote Site window on the right. Once you are finished disconnect from your server by clicking the Red X on the icon bar at the top of the window. Once you've disconnected from your server, you may safely exit the program.

Can I login to my server?

Sometimes your FTP client is not the best tool to get the job done. For example, you might need to reorganize your files, delete old pages, or rename directories. Due to security considerations, we do not allow telnet access to your site. However, we do offer SSH access which you can use for shell access and secure file transport (SCP or SFTP). IMPORTANT: Logining into your server is not recommended unless you have at least a basic understanding of Linux.

For Windows users we recommend Putty. Instructions on installation and use of this program are beyond the scope of this document, however, documentation is available from the same page.

If you use a Mac we again recommend Fugu. Documentation is available from the same page.

If you use Linux we recommend OpenSSH. Documentation is available from the same page.
